Zizou Bergs vs Gael Monfils Prediction

Zizou Bergs has enjoyed a fantastic week in Auckland and the Belgian is now one win away from his first title on the ATP Tour. He has been a regular in Challenger finals have reached 12 and won eight since his first in 2021 but this is a first final for him on the ATP Tour.

The Belgian really has had to do it the hard way this week as he has won six matches to reach the final due to having to come through qualifying. Four of his six wins have come in three sets including his excellent semi-final win over Nuno Borges.

When Borges won the second set, it looked like he had the momentum with him but Bergs dug deep and managed to win the final set 7-5.

He now meets the evergreen Gael Monfils in the final and the Frenchman is playing his 35th ATP Tour final. His record in previous finals is 12 wins and 22 losses but so many of those losses came early in his career when he struggled to get over the line.

More recently, Monfils has won seven of his last ten finals and that will give him good confidence. This is his first since October 2023 when he won the Stockholm Open and he will relish the opportunity to win another at the age of 38.

Monfils has been superb this week and he was once again in his semi-final victory over Nishesh Basavareddy. The youngster pushed him hard but Monfils won the key first set on a tiebreak and then took the second 6-4.

Monfils has plenty going for him in this final and the veteran is our pick. He is far more composed and confident in these big matches than he used to be. He has also had much less court time than Bergs so he should be fresh and in good shape for this final. Bergs has good momentum but this may be one step too far.
