It has been a poor start to the campaign for Young Boys with Atalanta recovering from a slow-ish start to look like a genuinely rampant title challenger in Serie A at this stage.

Young Boys Preview: Inexperienced Young Boys

After regaining the Swiss Super League title last season, the Berne-based Young Boys have massively underwhelmed in the 2024/25 campaign as they sit ninth in the 12-team league table with just four wins in 15 league matches domestically.

On the continent, the Swiss champions overcame Galatasaray in a surprise two-legged playoff round win in August but they have lost all four of their UEFA Champions League outings in the league phase, most recently losing 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk a few weeks ago.

Atalanta Preview: Brilliant Bergamasci

After a turbulent summer transfer window, Atalanta have been massively improved as the season has gone on with the Bergamasci involved in the Serie A title race and that continued with an impressive 3-1 defeat of Parma at the Ennio Tardini at the weekend.

In the UEFA Champions League, Atalanta remain unbeaten with two victories and two draws in their opening four matches. Their most recent outing saw Gian Piero Gasperini’s side comfortably defeat Stuttgart by two goals to nil in Germany.

Young Boys Team News: Injury crisis

Young Boys’ poor opening few months of this campaign has not been helped by something of an injury crisis that they are dealing with as the likes of Loris Benito and Patric Pfeiffer are sidelined alongside former Manchester United man Saidy Janko.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Keller; Athekame, Lauper, Jetzer, Blum; Ugrinic, Niasse; Males, Imeri, Colley; Ganvoula

Unavailable: Benito (Injured), A. Conte (Injured), F. Conte (Injured), Pfeiffer (Injured), Seiler (Injured), Crnovrsanin (Injured), Chaiwa (Injured), Zoukrou (Injured), Janko (Injured)

Young Boys vs Atalanta Prediction

Poor results and performances in the UEFA Champions League were and are pretty much always to be expected for Young Boys but they have underwhelmed significantly domestically, too, to suggest the problems are a bit deeper than just a lack of quality for this level. They face an Atalanta side that have a deep squad well-tuned to Gasperini’s methods and a heavy and comfortable away win is to be expected for this one in Berne.
