Caty McNally will see this as a good opportunity to progress against a solid, but beatable opponent in Viktoriya Tomova who was knocked out in the second round of the Indian Wells singles event by Maria Sakkari, the same round that saw McNally defeated in two close sets by Liudmila Samsonova.

The 23-year-old McNally has shown promise in her young career so far, especially in doubles, where she has previously reached a Grand Slam final, but McNally is yet to really have a singles breakthrough in what is becoming a crowded field of USA players. Her highest singles ranking is 54, eight places lower than Tomova’s best rank of 46.

Tomova’s service game was inconsistent in her last match, with less than half of her first serves landing in. This is an area of Tomova’s play that can be capitalised on by McNally, not to mention her fitness which may well factor into things as this contest goes on. McNally has the legs to power through a third set and backing her to win this 2-1 may prove a smart move.
