Vicente Luque: The Silent Assassin looking to rebound
Vicente Luque (22-10-1) comes into this bout looking to get a win to stay relevant in the top 15 of the UFC’s welterweight division. He has lost three of his last four bouts with his only win coming against veteran Rafael dos Anjos in August last year. His three losses have come against quality opponents – Belal Muhammad, Geoff Nal and most recently Joaquin Buckley – but the manner of the last two losses that were knockouts is the biggest concern around Luque coming into this one. He has fought at an incredibly high level for a long time but it remains to be seen how he responds from the first KO losses in his career.
Themba Gorimbo: Zimbabwean star on four-fight win streak
Themba Gorimbo (14-4) is enjoying life in the UFC as after losing on is debut, the Zimbabwean star has since won his last four fights. His win over Niko Price last time out by unanimous decision just 12 weeks ago was another step up for him and now he has been handed another stern test. Gorimbo has an incredible back story and this is arguably the biggest fight of his career so far. It is certainly the toughest fight he has had scheduled however.
Vicente Luque vs Themba Gorimbo Prediction
As is so often the case, the UFC matchmakers have paired a stud veteran who is on something of a downward trend, against a rising talent who is on a streak.
That is the case here as Vicente Luque is coming off some tough bouts with three losses in his last four. He meets Themba Gorimbo who has won his last four but has not been fighting the calibre of opponents that Luque has over the last few years.
The big questions are whether Luque can rebound after his first knockout losses and whether Gorimba can step up to this level.
Our sense is that this may be a bridge too far for Gorimbo but it is hard to have too much confidence in Luque based on recent performances. He has had some time out to recover and much depends on how he has handled it psychologically.
We just prefer Luque but that is based on history and a hunch that he will be fully focused and up for this one. It will not be easy however and we would advise caution with this one.
Our preferred play here is on backing this fight to go the distance. Gorimba will look to use his wrestling to stay out of Luque’s range while it would be no surprise after a couple of knockouts if Luque reverts to a more safety-first approach.
Prediction: Fight to go the distance
