Uruguay vs Argentina Prediction

Although they have only won one of their last six World Cup qualifiers, Uruguay head into this round of CONMEBOL games in second place, and although they may find themselves lower down by the time this fixture kicks off, they are in a very strong position to make it to next year's finals.

Marcelo Bielsa, a former Argentina boss, guided Uruguay to a dramatic 3-2 win over Colombia during the last international break in November, which was followed by a battling 1-1 draw with Brazil.

By their own high standards, Argentina dipped a little towards the back end of 2024, and indeed are winless in their last three away games, with defeats to Colombia and Paraguay sandwiching a 1-1 draw at Venezuela. However, they remain comfortably top of the South American section, and the remainder of the qualification campaign will be about building momentum as they prepare to defend their World Cup crown next year.

Injury will prevent all-time top goalscorer Lionel Messi from taking part in the March qualifiers, with the same to be said of forward Lautaro Martinez. La Albiceleste will be slightly weakened, then, and the door could be open for the hosts to claim at least a point.
