Ugo Humbert vs Arthur Fils Prediction
The top two French players in the world meet in the third round in Melbourne as Ugo Humbert and Arthur Fils battle it out for a place in the round of 16.
14th-seed Ugo Humbert has had a relatively kind path to this stage as he has beaten Matteo Gigante and then Hady Habib in straight sets.
He has had numerous battles with compatriot Artur Fils in the past and he can fully expect to have another one here in the John Cain Arena.
20th-seed Fils has arguably had the tougher run as he got past Otto Virtanen in four sets in the first round and then had an all-French clash in the second round. He met big-serving compatriot Quentin Halys and he had to show all his grit to edge a close-fought four-set match.
The pair have met four times since 2023, and three of those came last year which is a fair number given the fact Fils is only 20-years-old. Humbert won the first three encounters and Fils won the last in the final in Tokyo at the back end of last year. It will be interesting to see if that is something of a turning point for him and if there is one thing Fils does not lack, it is self-belief.
We marginally favour Fils here to grit this out and get a win but our preferred play here is on set betting. Expect this one to go deep and potentially to five sets.
