Tommy Paul vs Colton Smith prediction

Tommy Paul survived a tense battle with clay specialist Cristian Garin to finally break new ground in Houston by qualifying for the last eight for the first time.

The top seed looked to be in deep trouble after being completely outplayed in the first set, but fought his way through to down the 2019 champion 2-6 6-2 7-6 in a two-hour and 42-minute epic played in windy conditions.

Paul will hope to improve on the significant moments on the return having converted just four of his 14 break points as well as at the net (16/28), but he will take great confidence from clinching such a hard-fought win with the help of 34 winners and seven aces.

Next up, it’s fellow American and good friend Colton Smith, who actually watched Paul’s victory from the players’ box.

The 22-year-old Smith beat another American young gun in the shape of Ethan Quinn on Wednesday, easing to a 6-3 6-4 triumph that extends the qualifier’s run in Marrakesh to four wins without dropping a set.

The world number 13, Paul will be a significant step-up in class for Smith who is five years younger than the American number two. It’s hard to see Paul missing the chance to hammer home the bragging rights and we expect him to come through in more routine fashion than against Garin.
