Tommy Paul & Ben Shelton vs Jordan Thompson & Matthew Ebden Prediction
This deciding match in the doubles will see the winner progress to the Davis Cup semi-finals so the pressure is on the partnerships of Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton for the USA and Jordan Thompson and Matthew Ebden for Australia.
The USA have made a surprising selection by going with Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton for their doubles partnership rather than Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek. That may well be because the Matthew Ebden was part of a doubles pairing that beat Ram and Krajicek at the Paris Olympics.
Paul and Shelton especially have played a fair amount of doubles but this move does appear to be somewhat risky. They have played one tournament together and that came last year so it does not represent a great deal of experience of knowing each other's game.
One senses this was exactly what the Aussies would have taken at the start of play and the US’ decision to not go with their tried and tested doubles duo suggests they are trying to unsettle the Australians.
The Aussies had to win one singles given the American’s strength in that department, and hope they could take it to the doubles. We favour the duo of Thompson and Ebden to get this one over the line and progress to the semis.
