Tomas Machac comes into the clay swing on the back of a solid start to the year that has moved him to the brink of a more prolonged stay in the world’s top 20. 

The Czech enjoyed a satisfying spell on hard courts having followed up a quarter-final in Dallas with a maiden ATP Tour title triumph in Acapulco. 

Last time out in Miami the world number 21 withdrew in the round of 16 through illness but will be full of confidence on debut in Monte Carlo. 

The 24-year-old takes on clay-specialist Sebastian Baez who has already featured in three finals on the dirt in 2025, lifting the title in Rio, but most recently coming up just short in Bucharest. 

The diminutive Argentine, 24, has never gone beyond the first round in three previous visits to the Monte Carlo Country Club but his pedigree on this surface makes him a tricky opener for Machac.

This will be their first meeting and with the odds favouring Machac, a punt on Baez could offer good value as a dangerous underdog.
