World number nine Garbine Muguruza beat Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets to get her Olympic Games campaign up and running but this will be a tough test on Monday against the world number 49. Qiang Wang made full use of a kind opening round draw by beating Veronica Cepede Royg in straight sets and there are several factors in her favour here. The 29-year-old has two WTA titles to her name on hard courts, winning both in 2018 in Nanchang and Guangzhou in similar conditions to these and she spent some time training in Japan before turning professional.
This is an interesting match indeed as Wang has won both of their previous encounters, both on hard courts on the Asian swing of the 2018 season. The 29-year-old beat Muguruza in the semi-finals of both the Hong Kong Open and the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai within the space of a few weeks and given the Spaniard’s recent slip-ups this could be quite the upset in round two. Take the Chinese star to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
