THE PREDICTION
World number seven Karolina Pliskova has clearly put her Wimbledon final defeat behind her and could be a dark horse for a medal at Tokyo 2020 after a comprehensive straight-set win over Alize Cornet. The 29-year-old is embarking on her first Olympic Games representing the Czech Republic in both the Singles and Doubles, in which she and Marketa Vondrousova look a dangerous team. Pliskova will face fellow veteran Carla Suarez Navarro, who fabulously beat in-form Tunisian star Ons Jabeur for her first win since recovering from cancer earlier this year. Former world number six Suarez Navarro is due to retire at the end of this season and representing Spain in the Olympic Games for a remarkable fourth time will mean the world to her as part of the send-off.
This will be the eighth meeting between Pliskova and Suarez Navarro, with the Czech leading their head-to-head record 4-3 as things stand. There is more than a sense of an upset about this match with so much emotion surrounding 32-year-old Suarez Navarro’s exploits and her superb first round win. Pliskova should be able to play the match instead of the occasion but cautiously take her to win at least a set here as the likelier winner.
