THE PREDICTION
World number 48 Sara Sorribes Tormo has put herself firmly in the medal conversation this week at Tokyo 2020 after beating world number one Ash Barty in the first round. A second straight-sets performance saw the Spaniard beat Fiona Ferro to reach the round of 16 and she will take some serious stopping in this form. World number 18 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is capable of that, though, having conceded just three games across two matches so far against Sara Errani and Anna-Lena Friedsam. The 30-year-old veteran finished runner-up at Roland-Garros last month and looks determined to go one better at the Olympic Games, with Sorribes Tormo a big step up in quality but still theoretically the outsider.
Pavlyuchenkova leads their head-to-head record 2-1 having won both their most recent meetings, although the latest came four years ago. Sorribes Tormo’s form in Tokyo is nothing short of incredible and she could well find herself with a medal if she keeps this up. Take the Spaniard to win at least a set here in a match that could go either way.
