THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a thrilling clash between world number 50 Aslan Karatsev and number 57 Zhizhen Zhang, with Karatsev ending Zhang’s remarkable run to the Madrid Masters quarter-finals back in April. 26-year-old Zhang should enjoy a near-partisan atmosphere as the Asian Games Gold medallist who became the first Chinese player to reach the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters last week but Karatsev is well-versed to playing the enigmatic villain on court – doing so against last season’s Japan Open runner-up Frances Tiafoe in impressive straight sets on Tuesday. Zhang lost to eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz in three tight sets in Shanghai last week but he will be buzzing after coming back from a set down to avenge the loss against Hurkacz on Wednesday. The Chinese number one beat Karatsev in three sets in their first encounter at the Astana Open this time last season to see their head-to-head finely poised at 1-1 and that leaves a suitably cautious option here. Former number 14 Karatsev has earned at least a set in both of their previous encounters so take the Russian to do the same here to leave the victor up to chance.
