THE PREDICTION
World number 42 Yulia Putintseva won her second WTA title last season at the Budapest Open in what was a steady, successful 2021 for the Kazakh. The 27-year-old has reached two quarter-finals at Roland-Garros in 2016 and 2018 and one at the US Open in 2020 but she has so far struggled to get past the first week in Melbourne. She faces a reasonably winnable opening fixture here against world number 107 Harmony Tan but Putintseva has not played a match since a second round loss to Jelena Ostapenko at Indian Wells last October and there could be a fair amount of rustiness sin her game. 24-year-old Tan is making her Australian Open debut after finding plenty of success on the ITF tour last season but Putintseva winning this outright is the reasonable, slightly cautious option to take.
