World number 37 Jasmine Paolini came back from a set down to upset Beatriz Haddad-Maia on Sunday, continuing her excellent recent form. The 27-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd last month after a huge run to the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters, backing up a runners-up finish on her favoured clay at the Palermo Ladies Open in July. World number 147 Yue Yuan also came back from a set down to oust Elise Mertens in a huge win on Saturday and she will be backed to the hilt by a partisan atmosphere, with the Beijing crowds even more desperate to enjoy this week after missing the last three seasons. Paolini could be backed to come through this first encounter pretty comfortably elsewhere on tour but home advantage does hand Yuan a real edge here. Back Paolini to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
