THE PREDICTION
World number 96 Yoshihito Nishioka has suddenly sprung into life after more than a year out of form, beating both of Sunday’s Atlanta Open finalists so far at the Citi Open. A straight-sets victory over Jenson Brooksby in the first round was followed by a huge comeback win over Alex de Minaur on Wednesday in a welcome return to the kind of tennis the tricky left-hander is capable of. This looks a tougher prospect now for world number 24 Karen Khachanov, who also came back from a set down on Wednesday to beat Dominik Koepfer. The 26-year-old has been in deceptively good form of late, with three-straight quarter-finals reached in a row across grass and clay over the last few months, and it has taken top 10 opposition to oust him from three of his last four. Three sets seem likely here, and that could be the shrewd move, but backing Khachanov to eventually come through seems a reasonable risk.
