THE PREDICTION
World number 10 Grigor Dimitrov has finished runner-up at two Masters events since rediscovering his best tennis late last season, losing out to Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters in November and to an imperious Jannik Sinner in Miami back in March. The 32-year-old snapped his six-year title drought with victory at the Brisbane 500 in January but that defeat to Sinner looks to have knocked some stuffing out of his resurgence, with a three-set exit to 18-year-old Jakub Mensik at this stage of the Madrid Open two weeks ago not in the script.
World number 80 Yoshihito Nishioka could prove another sticky opener as the Japanese can frustrate plenty of top players on tour, although Dimitrov has avoided that so far with two very convincing straight-set wins in their previous encounters. 28-year-old Nishioka is far better than his current deflated ranking suggests and a three-set victory over clay specialist Sebastian Ofner on Wednesday says he can be competitive in these conditions. Given Dimitrov’s recent results, back the Bulgarian to come through outright rather than in two.
TIP: GRIGOR DIMITROV TO WIN
