THE PREDICTION
World number 52 Xiyu Wang finished runner-up to fellow Chinese Yue Yuan at the Austin Open in early March but she has struggled to bounce back so far, losing two of three matches since and coming in cold on clay. The 23-year-old won her maiden WTA title at the Guangzhou Open late last season on her favoured hardcourt but she made the third round here a year ago and backed that up with an excellent run to the last 16 in Rome to prove her ability in these conditions. World number 64 Ana Bogdan lost their only previous encounter on clay, her favoured surface, at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2022 but she should be targeting revenge here. The 31-year-old is in a similar state of flux, losing each of her last three matches since finishing runner-up to Karolina Pliskova on home soil at the Transylvania Open, but a three-set exit in Charleston two weeks ago at least gives her some match practice on clay. Take Bogdan to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
