THE LOWDOWN
XINYU WANG
20-year-old Chinese prospect Xinyu Wang converted three of 10 break points in an excellent performance against in-form Ann Li on Tuesday to claim her first ever Grand Slam victory at the fourth attempt. She will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 85th no matter the outcome of this first ever major second round match.
ARYNA SABALENKA
World number two Aryna Sabalenka has led a tormented life on court ever since contracting covid-19 on the eve of Indian Wells last October. The 23-year-old’s imperious serve has been failing all month long, with 39 double faults in her first two matches of the year seeing early exits in Adelaide, and she only just sneaked past Storm Sanders on Tuesday with 12 more doubles. Sabalenka reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon and the US Open last season, losing to the eventual runner-up of each in Karolina Pliskova and Leylah Fernandez, respectively.
THE PREDICTION
It remains unclear if Aryna Sabalenka’s world-class weapon is coming back to her at last after some frankly uncomfortable viewing over the last few weeks but her comeback victory over Sanders in the first round looked like a confidence-booster at the least. The gung-ho Belarussian should put in her best performance of the season here but Xinyu Wang is a fast-improving player capable of the upset if the world number two is still misfiring. Leave this one out of an accumulator but taking a small one-off on Wang to win at least a set but Sabalenka to win might be a shrewd move here.
