THE PREDICTION

World number 16 Veronika Kudermetova is one of the more hot-and-cold players on tour, enjoying the highs of victory at the Tokyo Open and back-to-back semi-finals in Madrid and Rome last season along with a whole host of missed opportunities. The 26-year-old will be targeting better runs at Grand Slams this year after failing to make it past the second round anywhere, with her best effort a quarter-final exit at Roland-Garros in 2022, but she brings fairly uninspiring form into Melbourne with a 2-2 record for 2024 so far. This looks a winnable opening draw for the Russian against world number 90 Viktorija Golubic but the Swiss was making great strides off of the tour late last season, winning three ITF/Challenger events to repair her dwindling ranking. Kudermetova should be blasting through in two in these conditions but expect this to be a rather nervy encounter. Golubic won their only previous meeting at Wimbledon in 2021, 11-9 in the deciding tiebreak, so back Kudermetova to edge through outright.

TIP: VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA TO WIN
