THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka faces former world number three Sloane Stephens here for the third time this season, with Azarenka winning both encounters to take a 5-4 lead in their tight head-to-head. The 34-year-old made short work of Magda Linette on Monday to look a creditable threat to the draw here in Montreal but former finalist Stephens looked in a good frame of mind in her win over Anhelina Kalinina too. Azarenka can count seven Masters titles amongst her remarkable 21 career WTA titles, which include her two Australian Open trophies from 2012 and 2013, but 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens more than pulls her weight in this blockbuster clash. Their record on hardcourts is currently finely poised at 3-3 but Azarenka has earned at least a set from each of their last three meetings, including her two most recent wins, to look the slight favourite. Back the Belarussian to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or risk the outright on its own.
