THE PREDICTION

World number 80 Mayar Sherif found her best tennis on Friday night to stun Italian number one Jasmine Paolini in three quality sets, backing-up an eye-catching opener over Petra Martic. The 28-year-old won her maiden WTA title on Italian clay at the Parma Ladies Open in 2022 and she should not be underestimated on her favoured surface in this likely thrilling, and very loud, first encounter with former number one Victoria Azarenka.

34-year-old Azarenka is currently ranked 24th after an excellent start to 2024 but she has rarely found the best of her potent weapons on clay, claiming just one of her 21 career titles on the surface. Azarenka did finish runner-up to Serena Williams here in 2013 but she has struggled against more comfortable clay-courters in recent appearances and her defeat to Sara Sorribes Tormo in Madrid last time out suggests Sherif stands a chance at a huge result. It took Elena Rybakina to beat the rejuvenated Egyptian in Madrid, and eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka last season, so consider taking Sherif to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance. Keep this match from any promising accumulators.
