THE LOWDOWN

VICTORIA AZARENKA

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka dismissed a tough opponent in Jil Teichmann on Wednesday to make it just six games conceded so far at the Australian Open. The 32-year-old won both her Grand Slam titles here back-to-back in 2012 and 2013 but she has also finished runner-up three times at the US Open in both of those seasons and again in 2020. Azarenka had previously lost in the first round of her last two appearances in Melbourne in 2019 and last season.

ELINA SVITOLINA

15th seed Elina Svitolina was pegged back in a winnable fixture with France’s Harmony Tan but she was in control of the deciding set before her opponent retired. The 27-year-old claimed the 16th WTA tour title of her career at the Chicago Women’s Open last season as well as a Bronze Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Back-to-back semi-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2019 are her best results at a major so far.

THE PREDICTION

Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka looks on a mission at the Australian Open after finding some excellent form over the last few months. She leads Elina Svitolina 4-0 in their head-to-head and with the Ukrainian not quite at her best level right now it seems reasonable that she can maintain that perfect record over the former world number three. A straight-sets quarter-final win for the Belarussian almost a year ago at the Doha Open is a decent benchmark that suggests straight sets but taking the outright win is a sensible concession.
