THE LOWDOWN
VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA
28th seed Veronika Kudermetova is yet to drop a set after two convincing wins over Claire Liu and Elena-Gabriela Ruse. The 24-year-old reached the final of Melbourne 1 two weeks ago before losing in straight sets to Simona Halep but she is nearing her career-high WTA world ranking of 28th reached last year after winning her first tour title at the St. Petersburg Open. The Russian is yet to reach the round of 16 at a major tournament.
MARIA SAKKARI
World number eight Maria Sakkari looked more assured in her second round match at the Australian Open despite a good fight from Chinese qualifier Qinwen Zheng. The 26-year-old reached the semi-finals of two Grand Slams last season, losing to the eventual champion of both in Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros and Emma Raducanu at the US Open. Sakkari became the first Greek to qualify for the WTA Finals last season, although she still has just one WTA title to her name from Rabat in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
This should be Maria Sakkari’s first tough test at the Australian Open but she is likely to come through it despite Veronika Kudermetova’s great 2022 form. Kudermetova reached the Melbourne 1 final via a walkover from her semi-final with Naomi Osaka, who would probably have won through to play Simona Halep in her stead. Nevertheless, Kudermetova is a solid performer capable of forcing a decider here and more, so taking Sakkari to in outright looks sensible. Their head-to-head record sits at one win apiece, with Sakkari levelling it in three sets at the Canadian Open last August.
