THE PREDICTION

World number 19 Veronika Kudermetova overcame Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets on Saturday in a result that is more impressive, in some ways, than her upset over Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals. The 26-year-old’s record in semi-finals, and indeed finals, is poor considering how well she has played this season but backing-up a first win over former number one Swiatek makes her very competitive in this final. World number four Jessica Pegula remains the clear favourite, though, after snapping Maria Sakkari’s winning streak at seven with a consummate straight-sets victory on Saturday. The 29-year-old win the Canada Masters last month to look a serious US Open challenger but victory here in Tokyo will offer a little redemption.

Pegula should receive the lion’s share of the neutral support with Korean ancestry but Kudermetova’s results this week have likely helped her cause. Kudermetova beat Pegula in three sets in their only previous encounter at the Madrid Masters earlier this season but back Pegula to return the favour in conditions that suit her best.
