World number 18 Veronika Kudermetova could be a dark horse for the latter stages of the US Open after a straight-sets victory over Maryna Zanevska sees her up to 13th in the live WTA world rankings. The 25-year-old has finished runner-up three times on tour this year to Simona Halep at Melbourne 1, Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai Tennis Championships and Anastasia Potapova at the Istanbul Open in what has been by far her most consistent season. 24-year-old Dalma Galfi will set a new career-high WTA world ranking herself of around 78th after overcoming Nuria Parrizas-Diaz and Harriet Dart, the latter to whom she handed a second-set bagel on Wednesday. The Hungarian will be tough to break down in momentum like this but Kudermetova claimed the win in their first tour-level meeting at the Miami Open back in March, albeit via a retirement by Galfi, and she can be backed to win this outright.
