THE LOWDOWN
VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA
24-year-old Veronika Kudermetova reached the final of Melbourne 1 last week before a straight-sets defeat to Simona Halep for some excellent match practice ahead of the Australian Open. The world number 32 won her first WTA tour title at the Charleston Open last season and she matches her best Grand Slam showing with a third round exit here last season.
CLAIRE LIU
21-year-old Claire Liu set a career-high WTA world ranking of 88th late last year after finding some success on the ITF circuit throughout 2021. The American reached the second round of Wimbledon last year for a best Grand Slam showing so far and she is making her Australian Open debut here.
THE PREDICTION
Although Veronika Kudermetova was spared a semi-final clash with Naomi Osaka last Saturday she earned her place in the final with three decent wins that should be enough form to overcome Claire Liu here. The Russian was part of the Billie Jean King Cup winning side last year and she could tentatively be backed to win through in straight sets here. The outright pick is the sensible move inside an accumulator, though, with Liu impressing in a three-set defeat to Marta Kostyuk last week.
