THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Veronika Kudermetova came into the Tokyo Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 13th and she proved unlucky for her first opponent, Fernanda Contreras, who managed to win just game from the Russian on Thursday. Kudermetova has been enjoying her best most consistent year on tour but she is yet to win a tournament, finishing runner-up on three occasions so far. World number 16 Beatriz Haddad-Maia claimed her first two titles this summer on grass at Nottingham and Birmingham and she more recently reached a first Masters final, finishing runner-up to Simona Halep in Toronto. The 26-year-old received a walkover to the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Open after home favourite Naomi Osaka was forced to pull out of the draw but she looked assured in her first round win over Yuki Naito. On results in Tokyo so far, Kudermetova looks the likelier of two very capable victors in this first tour meeting but a winner is hard to call. Back the Russian to win at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
