VARVARA GRACHEVA First round of 16 at a Grand Slam

23-year-old Varvara Gracheva grabbed an excellent straight-sets win over clay-courter Irina-Camelia Begu on Saturday, backing-up a consummate victory over Bernarda Pera. The Frenchwoman was taken aback by the support she was given by home support during her career-best upset over Maria Sakkari in the first round, having switched allegiances from Russian last season, with this fortnight undoing months of poor form after a strong 2023.

MIRRA ANDREEVA Second round of 16 at a Grand Slam

17-year-old Mirra Andreeva conceded just three games to fellow youngster Peyton Stearns on Saturday to, quite remarkably, back up a three-set epic win over former world number one Victoria Azarenka that sailed past midnight. The rising star had already proved that she has the game to compete with the best at a Grand Slam, coming agonisingly close to making the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last summer on her debut, but proving that she also possesses the engine makes her a decent dark horse for something special this week in Paris.

VARVARA GRACHEVA VS MIRRA ANDREEVA PREDICTION

Varvara Gracheva should receive almost as much partisan support as she has enjoyed so far this fortnight but neutrals, and awed home fans, are likely to be swayed by this charismatic, ruthless next star of the sport in Mirra Andreeva. The 17-year-old could have been forgiven for a slow start in her third round clash with Peyton Sterns, who had been riding a seven-match winning streak on clay, after her marathon win over Victoria Azarenka but she dominated the occasion like a future champion to further prove her credentials.

Gracheva is a tough player to break down, especially in her current momentum, but back Andreeva to earn at least a set from their first encounter as the likelier of two rather surprising quarter-finalists.
