23-year-old Varvara Gracheva was ranked inside the top 40 and on the rise by the end of last season but she endured a really poor start to 2024 to fall back outside the top 80. A remarkable comeback over Maria Sakkari in the first round, backed by a partisan support that seemed to surprise as much as boost her, looks to have given her a new lease of life after dropping just four games to clay specialist Bernarda Pera on Thursday.
This will be another stern test by a clay pro in former number 22 Irina-Camelia Begu, who has impressed since returning from a lengthy injury absence. The 33-year-old is yet to drop a set this week after ousting 27th seed Linda Noskova handily on Thursday and she has needed the likes of Madison Keys and Danielle Collins to oust her since comeback. Take the Romanian to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
