World number eight Daria Kasatkina conceded just three games to Tatjana Maria on Saturday for an excellent start to her Indian Wells campaign. The 25-year-old’s form has been incredibly erratic so far this season but she ended last year in great shape, qualifying for her WTA Finals with two late titles in Granby and San Jose. 22-year-old Varvara Gracheva will be a significant test of Kasatkina’s credentials here after beating 25th-seed Petra Martic in straight sets on Saturday. The younger Russian should set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 57th no matter the outcome here after she finished runner-up to Marta Kostyuk at the Austin Open the week before last. Gracheva upset an out-of-sorts Kasatkina in the first round of the Australian Open back in January but the slow hardcourt conditions at Indian Wells should suit Kasatkina a little better in this rematch. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record that Kasatkina should be able to take the lead in here but call it outright and leave this match out of any promising accumulators.
