THE LOWDOWN

The United States powered through to the Davis Cup Finals comfortably in the end, with World number 12 Taylor Fritz beating Alexander Bublik in three sets after number 29 Tommy Paul made it two in two with an assured display against Mikhail Kukushkin. Rajeev Ram and Jack Sock stuttered to a fairly surprising defeat to Bublik and Aleksandr Nedovyesov but with the tie already run, and the US already through, that could have been expected. The US are through to the Davis Cup Finals with a tie to spare and they could have an even stronger team ready to go later this year.

The Netherlands looked a solid side coming into the Davis Cup group stages and they proved it with a thrilling 2-1 victory over host nation Great Britain. World number 48 Tallon Griekspoor lost the opening fixture to Dan Evans to throw the win into serious doubt but Botic van de Zandschulp upset the odds with a masterful straight-sets victory over world number eight Cam Norrie to set a tone of defiance ahead of the deciding doubles. Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop put in an incredible performance to take the first and third sets of a fiercely contested doubles dogfight to see the Netherlands through to the Davis Cup Finals with a tie to spare.

THE PREDICTION

With both sides through to the Davis Cup Finals already this should be a fairly well-contested dead rubber for glory of winning Group D in Glasgow. Tommy Paul should have more than enough to take down Tallon Griekspoor in the opener to see the US 1-0 up ahead of an intriguing first option clash between Taylor Fritz and Botic van de Zandschulp. World number 35 Van de Zandschulp has won both of his ties this week so far, whilst Fritz fell to Cam Norrie on Wednesday before edging past Alexander Bublik on Friday. With the American still struggling to find his best form this first meeting on court between the two could edge the Dutchman’s way, particularly as he will probably have the extra motivation of levelling the tie. Rajeev Ram and Jack Sock should be able to blast through Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop if the decider is required but specific scoreline looks to tricky to call with confidence here. The US look capable of taking 2-1 but back them to win outright here.
