THE PREDICTION

World number 34 Ugo Humbert enjoyed a huge milestone in his road back to the top 30 on Monday, overcoming Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets to extend his head-to-head record to 3-1 over the Greek. The 25-year-old was proving a dark horse on tour in 2020 and 2021 with victories over the likes of Tsitsipas and Medvedev, the latter of whom beat him in three sets in Beijing to level their record 2-2, and after a dreadful 2022 the Frenchman appears to be back. World number 51 J.J. Wolf is also enjoying some resurgent form after a tough summer on tour, upsetting Cam Norrie in three sets on Saturday before an impressive comeback over Matteo Arnaldi on Monday. The 24-year-old found the form of his career this time last season and it will be interesting to see where he can go this time around but a first meeting with Humbert looks too steep a challenge at this time. Humbert is deceptively good, definitely strong enough to break the top 10 one day, and after so long out of the spotlight it should take a player of that level to oust him in Shanghai. Take Humbert to win outright.
