THE LOWDOWN
World number 10 Holger Rune has beaten two vastly different players in three sets so far for an impressive start to his Australian Open campaign, ousting Filip Krajinovic in the first round before avoiding a tiebreak in an assured performance over Maxime Cressy. The 19-year-old stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets at Roland-Garros last summer before a quarter-final exit to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud but his best result of his career came much sooner when he beat Novak Djokovic to claim a first Masters title in Paris last November.
THE PREDICTION
Former world number 25 Ugo Humbert started last season by beating Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Cup before contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open totally hampered the rest of a gruelling 2022. The Frenchman has a lot of work to do to get back to his excellent best we saw on tour throughout 2020 and 2021 but back-to-back wins over Richard Gasquet and Denis Kudla here are very encouraging. This looks a few steps too far against Rune, who beat Humbert twice in straight sets last season on hardcourts, but there will be positives to take from a hopefully competitive performance and he ha splayed well enough to suggest four sets are possible. Back Rune to win outright here.
