THE PREDICTION
This match looks a coupon buster that should be kept well away from an accumulator. World number 46 Ugo Humbert is well below par this season after contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open and he comes in as a lucky loser after failing to qualify this weekend. However, the 23-year-old is a quality player who only needs one result, and perhaps this second chance, to get his season up and running and he beat Daniil Medvedev in his first match of the year. World number 16 Denis Shapovalov is excellent across all courts and the high altitude conditions in Madrid should favour his powerful serve. The Canadian comes in a little cold, though, with his last match a first round defeat to Lloyd Harris at the Miami Open back in March. Shapovalov leads this head-to-head record 2-1 with both of his wins coming in three sets on clay, most recently at the 2020 Italian Open, so taking him to win outright seems the sensible move in what could be a madcap match.
