Former number 14 Aslan Karatsev came back from a set down to beat Mackenzie McDonald on Thursday, claiming a first win since his return from injury at the start of the year and a first anywhere since finishing runner-up to Ben Shelton at the Tokyo Open. The 30-year-old has struggled to stay consistent in recent seasons, having burned brightly across 2021 and early 2022, but he reached the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters this time last season to prove his ability in these conditions and he will be hungry to make the most of this opportunity.
World number 16 Tommy Paul is a solid all-courter at his best but the American has played just twice on clay coming into Rome, with his impressive run to the semi-finals of Indian Wells in March seeing something of a hangover since. Karatsev beat Paul in straight sets at the Olympic Games three years ago but this second encounter is likely to come closer as the Russian desperately seeks his top gear.
