Tomas Martin Etcheverry’s grass-court preparations for Wimbledon were hardly ideal given that he lost at the first stage at both Queen’s and Eastbourne, but the 30th seed found some rhythm in his opener at SW19, seeing off Luca Nardi in straight sets.
The Argentine’s opponent, Alexei Popyrin, was made to work a little harder when he ousted Thiago Monteiro in four sets on Tuesday, and the 24-year-old will now seek to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
Neither player particularly excels on grass, and there’s not a great deal to separate the pair in the ATP rankings. Therefore, we can expect this one to swing back and forth in momentum which should lead to a lengthy encounter. Over 3.5 sets is the tip.
