THE PREDICTION
World number 15 Ben Shelton beat defending champion Frances Tiafoe in three sets to lift the Houston Open trophy three weeks ago, claiming his second ATP title and a surprise first on clay – a surface he had shown very little fervour for so far in his young career. The 21-year-old reached the semi-finals of the US Open last summer, before defeat to eventual champion Novak Djokovic, and he rode that form to a maiden ATP title at the Tokyo 500 to book-end an incredible debut season that started with a shock run to the last eight in Melbourne. World number 50 Tomas Machac would similarly prefer to play his tennis on a faster surface, proving himself a threat to the top 30 with a brilliant run to the quarter-finals in Miami last month, but he beat Emil Ruusuvuori in three sets on Thursday to prove he can perform on clay too. A first meeting between two heavy-hitting youngsters could end up one of the matches of the round but back Machac to earn at least a set here with recent form on European clay perhaps the difference maker against Shelton’s three-week break.
TIP: TOMAS MACHAC TO WIN A SET
