24-year-old Alex de Minaur set a career-high ATP world ranking of 12th this month after reaching his maiden Masters final in Toronto. The Aussie, now ranked 13th, stunned top 10ers Taylor Fritz and former champion Daniil Medvedev before running out of steam against Jannik Sinner in the final, his second-consecutive final after defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Los Cabos Open. 22-year-old Timofey Skatov will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 122nd after coasting through qualifying without dropping a set to make his US Open debut here but facing De Minaur’s speed for the first time will be hugely difficult. There is certainly scope for an upset here after De Minaur looked a little jaded in Cincinnati two weeks ago but taking the 13th seed to come through outright looks the sensible move, if a little cautious.
