THE PREDICTION
World number nine Taylor Fritz received a bye to the round of 16 here in Delray Beach as the top seed and defending champion, ousting Miomir Kecmanovic in three sets this time last season to lift a sixth ATP title. The 26-year-old went on to claim his seventh career title in Atlanta last summer but overall it was a frustrating year for the American, whose high standards have been tested practically ever since losing that epic five-set quarter-final to Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2022.
Nuno Borges, also 26, set a career-high ATP world ranking of 46th after his career-best run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open last month. The Portuguese took a set form eventual champion Daniil Medvedev in that match but victories over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Grigor Dimitrov say he can enjoy a first foray into the top 40 at least this season. A straight-sets victory over Gabriel Diallo on Monday was a solid start to his campaign in Florida but Fritz took a much-needed break after a four-set exit o Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of Melbourne last month and that should pay dividends this week. Back the top seed avoid an upset here.
