THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Taylor Fritz enjoyed a walkover through to the semi-finals of the Japan Open after Nick Kyrgios was forced to withdraw from their enticing quarter-final clash on Friday. The 24-year-old has dropped sets in both of his kind fixtures so far in Tokyo, though, and he has not felt himself on court for some time since contracting covid-19 and aggravating a foot injury in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon back in July. This looks like world number 22 Denis Shapovalov’s day on Saturday after the Canadian ousted in-form Borna Coric in straight sets for a perfect campaign so far this week. The 23-year-old has been struggling with his form all season but finishing runner-up at the Korea Open last weekend looks to have focused him a little and he can be confident here with a healthy 4-1 lead in his head-to-head with Fritz. Shapovalov has won at least a set in all five of their previous meetings, making that the sensible option in this likely thriller, but recent results suggest he can edge through outright.
