TAYLOR FRITZ Through to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros for the first time

World number 12 Taylor Fritz looked in control of his third round clash with Thanasi Kokkinakis before the dogged Aussie fought back to force a decider. 26-year-old Fritz has dropped sets in each of his three matches so far this campaign but he should be better for coming through a battle as he desperately seeks to return to his determined best self on court.

CASPER RUUD Finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2022, Novak Djokovic in 2023

Former world number two Casper Ruud overcame a tough clay courter in Tomas Martine Etcheverry on Saturday, in four sets, to steady the ship after a madcap five-set slog against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round. The 25-year-old has finished runner-up here in each of the last two seasons, as well as at the US Open in 2022 to Carlos Alcaraz, but he remains perhaps the most complete top clay-courter on tour – if excluding his soon-to-be departed idol Rafael Nadal.

TAYLOR FRITZ VS CASPER RUUD PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating and likely lengthy second clash between Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz, with Ruud overcoming the American in their first encounter with victory in three sets at the ATP Finals in 2022. The Norwegian is certainly the more comfortable in these conditions but Fritz is a serious all-court threat at his best on tour – although it would be hard to make a case for that to be true of his form at the moment.

Both players have spent plenty of time on court already this fortnight and sets looks likely to go both ways once more. Back Ruud to eventually find a way through but you could consider taking both to win at least a set to leave this result up to chance.
