THE PREDICTION
18-year-old Taylah Preston will break inside the top 140 for the first time after upsetting in-form Magdalena Frech in three sets on Tuesday, claiming the biggest win of her young career. The Aussie finished runner-up at a Challenger event in Mexico last week to bring some solid form into the San Diego Open and she impressed in a three-set defeat to Caroline Garcia last month in Adelaide to suggest a rise was on the cards. World number 34 Marta Kostyuk won her maiden WTA title at the Austin Open this time last season but she has chosen to tackle this higher-ranked tournament in lieu of defending it. The 21-year-old needed three sets to oust Ann Li on Tuesday but a first win back from a small injury lay-off should settle some nerves as she hopes to build on her career-best run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open last month. A first meeting with Preston should fall in straight sets but take Kostyuk to win outright for caution’s sake, particularly as Preston’s momentum will be tough to break early on.
TIP: MARTA KOSTYUK TO WIN
