World number 65 Tatjana Maria came back from a set down to oust up-and-coming Peyton Stearns at this stage of the Madrid Open two weeks ago but she was quickly ousted by Victoria Azarenka. The 36-year-old can often be counted upon to perform to her ranking, particularly in her recent renaissance years on the natural surfaces, but 19-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova should not be underestimated at world number 150 after qualifying with gusto this week. The Czech broke inside the top 50 last summer before falling away quite dramatically but it should be sooner rather than later that she manages to return. Given her momentum from qualifying, back the teenager to earn at least a set from this first encounter to leave the victor up to chance.
