THE LOWDOWN
TARO DANIEL
World number 120 Taro Daniel out in one of the performances of his career in the second round of the Australian Open to beat an out-of-sorts Andy Murray in straight sets. The 28-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 64th back in 2018, the same year he won his only title to date at the Istanbul Open, with this his first third round match at a Grand Slam.
JANNIK SINNER
World number 10 Jannik Sinner looked assure din a straight-sets victory over Steve Johnson on Thursday to make it back-to-back straight set victories so far in Melbourne. The 20-year-old won four ATP titles last season including a first 500 event title at the Washington Open and he also reached a first Masters final in defeat to Hubert Hurkacz at the Miami Open. Sinner just missed out on ATP Finals qualification but he came in as Matteo Berrettini’s replacement and impressed, taking US Open champion Daniil Medvedev to a 10-8 deciding tiebreak before defeat.
THE PREDICTION
Taro Daniel must not be underestimated here after a perhaps career-best performance under pressure on Thursday. The 28-year-old possesses a better serve than his slight frame suggests but then again world number 10 Jannik Sinner cuts a similar figure on court. The Italian’s balance on court is something to behold and he is likely to find more joy against Daniel than Murray after his two convincing performances so far with little energy spent. If the Japanese performs like he did on Thursday this could go to four or even five but Sinner is just as likely to dismantle him in three, so take the Italian to win outright for a pretty unimaginative but sensible pick.
