THE PREDICTION

Former world number six Gael Monfils was ranked just inside the top 400 at the start of June but the 36-year-old has enjoyed a hugely impressive past month, reaching the quarter-finals in Washington, Toronto and the round of 16 in Cincinnati. Victories over the likes of Cam Norrie, Alex de Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas suggest it will take top 30 opposition at least to oust the Frenchman from New York, where he was a semi-finalist in 2016, but five-set tennis could become more and more significant with each passing round. World number 95 Taro Daniel is a tough first round draw for most players with a ceiling far higher than his ranking suggests and the 30-year-old will know that patience can be his salvation here. Monfils blasted past Daniel in straight sets in their only previous encounter at Roland-Garros in 2019 but this could come a lot closer. Back Monfils to earn at least two sets to leave the victor up to chance or consider talking Daniel to earn at least a set.
