THE PREDICTION

World number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas has been handed a very tough draw at the US Open with this opening fixture against Milos Raonic looking a serious chance for an upset. The 25-year-old has yet to take a set from former world number three Raonic but the Canadian is far from the player who last beat Tsitsipas three years ago to reach the Cincinnati Open final. Tsitsipas recently won his first outdoors hardcourt title at the Los Cabos Open to bring some strong form into New York but he has struggled here in the past with two third round exits his best showing so far. 32-year-old Raonic stunned Frances Tiafoe at the Canada Masters earlier this month before losing to Mackenzie McDonald in the round of 16. The Canadian has reached the second week four times in New York but his crowning achievement was finishing runner-up to Andy Murray at Wimbledon in 2016. The big-server should find plenty of joy against Tsitsipas’ reasonable weaknesses on return but the Greek could be one to watch this fortnight as his father has been relived of duties for the tournament in favour of coach Mark Philippoussis.

It will be fascinating to see how Tsitsipas copes under pressure without his father's often anxiety-inducing presence in his box but it would not be a huge surprise to see him fall early here. Both of Raonic’s wins over Tsitsipas saw a tiebreak, so take the Canadian to earn at least a set and for at least one tiebreak in the match.
