THE PREDICTION
World number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas overcame world number one Daniil Medvedev in three tight, high-quality sets on Saturday to re-write the script of his season so far. The 24-year-old has really only convinced at the Monte-Carlo Open this year, where he defended his first Masters title from last season, but adding a win over Medvedev in their one-sided head-to-head, now at 7-3, is a significant statement ahead of this final and the incoming US Open. The other, far more surprising finalist is world number 152 Borna Coric, who has broken back inside the top 50 in the live rankings after a stellar campaign from nowhere. The 25-year-old is through to his first final since the 2020 St. Petersburg Open after stunning the likes of Rafael Nadal, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Roberto Bautista Agut and now Cam Norrie to reach a first Masters final since the 2018 Shanghai Open. The former world number 12 will be on cloud nine with his week after missing more than a year from the tour due to surgery that might have ended his career and he has fast-tracked his recovery up the rankings to make a new target of re-joining the top 30, perhaps even 20, by the end of the season seem feasible.
The pair share a head-to-head record at 1-1, although Tsitsipas’ win on clay came via an early retirement by Coric in 2018. Their previous match was a five-set epic in the third round of the 2020 US Open that Coric came back from 1-0 and 2-1 down to steal and Tsitsipas was in ATP Finals-winning form that season. This could come down to the wire, with both players losing more finals than they have won so far in their careers. The sensible option is backing Tsitsipas to win at least a set but the shrewd move could be taking Coric, on the crest of a huge confidence wave, to snatch at least one as perhaps the just-about likelier victor. Three sets could be a suitable way to avoid picking either player here.
