THE LOWDOWN

Spain beat Canada to win the 2019 Davis Cup Finals but Canada returned the favour back in January to win the ATP Cup and they doubled down on Friday with a huge performance in Valencia. Vasek Pospisil set the tone with a valiant defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets before Felix Auger-Aliassime made up for his poor week so far to overcome new world number one Carlos Alcaraz from a set down. US Open champion Alcaraz will likely play again in this now suddenly crucial tie with South Korea, with the climb down from Grand Slam win to shock Davis Cup defeat likely to be a useful wake-up call in time to help Spain through. Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez lost to Canada’s Pospisil and Auger-Aliassime last time out and it will be interesting to see if one or both of them are swapped out to ensure Spain’s passage if required in the decider.

South Korea lost both of their singles matches to Serbia in straight sets to crash out of the Davis Cup but they have lost both ties 1-2 to make new ground at this level. Doubles pairing Jisung Nam and Minkyu Song played well to beat Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic and Nikola Cacic on Thursday, whilst Soonwoo Kwon grabbed one of the best results of his career in stunning Felix Auger-Aliassime earlier this week.

THE PREDICTION

Group B has gotten suddenly fraught on the last day of the Davis Cup group stages, with Spain desperately needing a win here to progress alongside one of Canada, to whom they may feel bad blood after they gifted Serbia an easy tie win on Saturday as they fielded an under-strength side. Luckily for Spain they should have more than enough to oust both Soonwoo Kwon and Seong-Chan Hong in the singles matches which would be enough to take the host nation from third to top the group without even playing the doubles. The likelihood is, though, that Valencia helps the hosts over the finish line in a 3-0 whitewash.
