THE LOWDOWN

Spain have won the Davis Cup Finals six times, all of which have come this century spanning form 2000 to 2019. They looked a good side before the huge boost to their squad in newly-crowned world number one Carlos Alcaraz as he comes to Valencia for a homecoming as the new US Open champion and this whole week should be a huge Spanish celebration. 34-year-old Roberto Bautista Agut was the hero of 2019 as he flew in late in the Davis Cup Finals after his father passed away to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final to seal victory after Rafael Nadal had beaten Denis Shapovalov in the first option bout. The world number 21 has won two titles this season in Qatar and Kitzbuhel and started off the season in serious form representing Spain at the ATP Cup, taking them all the way to the final before losing to the aforementioned Auger-Aliassime to finish runner-up to Team Canada.

Serbia won the Davis Cup Finals in 2010 fronted by Novak Djokovic but the former world number one is not available this week and they could suffer badly as a result. World number 33 Miomir Kecmanovic is a solid first option nonetheless after enjoying his best season on tour yet at just 23 years old but he has lost four of his last six matches coming into the Davis Cup, with a four-set defeat to Richard Gasquet at the US Open far from his electrifying performances back in March. World number 41 Filip Krajinovic has found the more recent good form, and oddly on grass after previously avoiding the surface at all costs, as he reached the Queen’s final back in June. However, he too has lost four of his last six matches on tour, albeit to top players in Nick Kyrgios, Carlos Alcaraz, Dan Evans and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

THE PREDICTION

Spain look the country to beat in Group B of the Davis Cup Finals and without Novak Djokovic to drag Serbia through a singles and doubles decider Serbia look a little lightweight here. Miomir Kecmanovic will fancy his chances at an upset against Carlos Alcaraz as the Spaniard has to transition from US Open champion to a new tournament so soon but playing on home soil in Valencia will likely help the Spaniard cope with any early wobbles. Roberto Bautista Agut is likely to beat Filip Krajinovic too, making backing Spain to win 2-0 look a reasonable pick here.
